Blanket Toss

Jimmy Kalinek soars high in the sky during a blanket toss demonstration that was hosted during Inuvik’s National Indigenous Day celebrations on June 21. The blanket toss is a traditional Inuvialuit activity that was used primarily for hunting. A community would surround and hold the edges of a blanket made of walrus or seal hide, and a hunter would climb into the centre of the blanket and would then be tossed into the air to scout the land for caribou, whales or other animals in the distance.
